About Sremski Karlovci
A small town at the bank of the Danube, at the foot of Fruška Gora Mountain used to be a major religious center of Serbia in the 18th century. Namely, in 1713 Sremski Karlovci became residence of the Serbian Orthodox Metropoly on the territory of the Habsburg monarchy.
The buildings of the outmost importance for Serbian history are situated at the baroque core of the town, around the Four Lions Fountain square. These are: "Saint Nicolas' Cathedral (built in 1762), "Patriarch's Palace" (built in 1894), "Seminary" (built in 1900), and the Karlovci Grammar School - the oldest Serbian grammar school founded in 1791. The Chapel of Peace was built on the spot where in 1699 Turkey and European forces negotiated a peace treaty, so-called "Peace of Karlovci".
Sremski Karlovci became famous for its well-known wines which are worth tasting in one of many private wine cellars. Grape Harvest at Karlovci is a festivity dedicated to grapes and wine held in September every year.
